UAE Metro Stations Reopen After Record Rainfall: Updates and Impacts

The Roads and Transport Authority announced the reopening of three Dubai Metro stations that had been closed due to flooding last month. Onpassive, Equiti, and Mashreq stations on the Red Line are now operating as normal. They were out of service since the April 16 storm, which affected vast areas of the UAE. Trains are now running smoothly at these stations. The Energy Metro Station is expected to return to service next week.

Following the UAE’s largest day of rainfall in 75 years last month, several stations on the Green and Red lines were closed. The heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding, travel disruption, and damage.

The National Centre of Meteorology reported that the volume of rain was the highest since official records began in 1949. In one area of Al Ain on April 16, authorities recorded 254mm of rain in 24 hours. This amount is equivalent to about two years’ worth of average rainfall in the UAE. The persistent downpours were described as an “exceptional event in the UAE’s climate history since the start of recording climate data” by the NCM.
