UAE Announces Two-Month Visa Amnesty Starting in September

New Opportunity for Expired Residency Visas

Starting in September, the UAE will launch a two-month amnesty program for individuals with expired residency visas. This initiative, introduced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), aims to give people a chance to either regularize their status or leave the country without facing fines.

The ICP explained that this grace period is a gesture of compassion and tolerance, allowing individuals with expired documentation to get their affairs in order according to UAE laws.

A Crucial Lifeline for Many

Local welfare organizations have praised the decision, noting that it will provide much-needed relief to many individuals. Ishtiyak Raziq, past president of the Sri Lankan welfare association Sahana, highlighted the struggles of those who have overstayed their visas due to job search difficulties, deceptive agents, financial crises, or health issues without insurance.

Raziq pointed out that this amnesty is particularly timely for those who faced employment challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic. “The UAE government’s decision comes at a crucial time, and we are grateful that expatriates now have a chance to return home and start afresh,” he said.

Similar Initiatives in the Past

This upcoming amnesty follows previous similar schemes, including one in 2018, which allowed individuals to adjust their visa status without fear of fines or imprisonment. The UAE has also held amnesty programs in 2007 and 2013.

A notable event in February 2023, “A Home For All,” highlighted the urgency of the issue, with a huge turnout at a Dubai government event designed to provide advice to those with expired visas. The event was so popular that it had to be postponed on the first day due to the overwhelming number of people seeking support.

Current Visa Overstay Rules

As of October 2022, the ICP has standardized the financial penalty for visa overstays at Dh50 per day. Residency visa holders have a six-month grace period to either leave the country or change their status by securing employment once their visa expires or is canceled.

The new amnesty program will benefit those who have stayed beyond this six-month period, providing a valuable opportunity to resolve their status issues.
