Dubai to Phase Out Traditional Buses for Electric Alternatives

Dubai is making a significant move towards sustainability by gradually phasing out traditional buses in four key areas of the city. Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Public Transport Agency, confirmed that the RTA will integrate 40 electric buses into its fleet. This initiative supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy, which aims for a fully eco-friendly public transport system by 2050.

Pilot Routes for Electric Buses

The initial rollout will feature electric buses on selected routes, including Business Bay, Al Ghubaiba, Al Satwa, and Al Jafiliya. The RTA chose these areas based on their suitability for electric bus operations, considering factors like range and available charging infrastructure.

Enhancing Public Transport Technology

The RTA is also implementing advanced technologies to improve public transport. New buses will include the Raqeeb Driver Behaviour Monitoring System to enhance driver conduct. Additionally, an Automated Passenger Counting (APC) system will help reduce fare evasion. These innovations aim to ensure safety and efficiency in Dubai’s public transport network.

No Change in Fares

Bahrozyan assured passengers that fares will remain unchanged despite the transition from diesel to electric buses. Although electric buses generally have higher procurement costs, the RTA is committed to keeping transport options affordable for residents and visitors.

Environmental Impact and Future Plans

The introduction of electric buses will significantly reduce carbon emissions, with estimates suggesting a decrease of about 3,900 tonnes per year. Bahrozyan emphasized that the RTA conducted extensive trials to ensure electric buses can handle Dubai’s extreme summer heat, confirming their reliability. As part of its sustainability strategy, the RTA will recycle traditional buses according to eco-friendly standards, further contributing to Dubai’s commitment to a greener future.
