Dubai has unveiled Al Layan Oasis, a major eco-tourism project set to reshape desert experiences in the emirate. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the launch as part of Dubai’s long-term sustainability and tourism strategy.
The project combines nature, innovation, and leisure in one destination. It aims to bring residents and visitors closer to the desert while protecting its ecosystem.
What Is Al Layan Oasis?
Al Layan Oasis is a large-scale eco-tourism destination in Al Marmoom. The development spans 10 million square feet (around one million square meters).
At the heart of the project lies a 2.5 million square foot man-made lake. This lake anchors the entire development. Facilities and attractions will surround it.
The oasis will welcome up to 330,000 visitors annually. Dubai designed the project to balance tourism growth with environmental protection. Visitors will enjoy a peaceful desert escape without harming the natural landscape.
Located about 50 minutes from central Dubai, the oasis offers easy access while maintaining a true desert atmosphere.
A Key Part of Dubai’s Sustainability Strategy
Al Layan Oasis supports the Blue and Green Roadmap 2030 launched by Dubai Municipality. The roadmap includes:
-
Planting 1.5 million trees within five years
-
Delivering more than 45 landscaping projects
-
Adding 120 new parks across Dubai
The project also aligns with:
-
Dubai Countryside and Rural Areas Development Plan
-
Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033
-
Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan
These strategies focus on sustainability, wellbeing, and balanced urban growth. Al Layan Oasis strengthens all three goals.
Infrastructure and Main Features
Dubai designed the infrastructure to enhance both comfort and sustainability.
1,000 Parking Spaces
The site will include 1,000 dedicated parking spaces. This ensures smooth access during peak periods.
14 Kilometers of Walking and Cycling Tracks
The oasis will feature 14 km of tracks. Four kilometers will rise five meters above ground. These elevated paths will offer panoramic views of the lake and surrounding desert.
The paths will also connect to existing Al Marmoom routes, expanding Dubai’s outdoor recreation network.
Visitor Center
A fully equipped visitor center will promote environmental education. Guests will learn about desert ecosystems, conservation, and sustainable tourism.
Native Landscaping and Shaded Areas
The project will use native plants to create shaded zones. These plants require less water and support local wildlife. This approach strengthens biodiversity while improving visitor comfort.
The Four Zones of Al Layan Oasis
Dubai divided the oasis into four themed zones to serve different audiences.
1. The Gathering Oasis
This zone will act as the social hub.

Environmental Sustainability at the Core
Dubai placed sustainability at the center of Al Layan Oasis.
Native planting will reduce water consumption and protect the desert ecosystem. Shaded areas will lower heat exposure and improve comfort.
The lake will help moderate temperatures in the surrounding area. It may also attract birdlife and enhance biodiversity.
The project demonstrates how eco-tourism and conservation can work together.
Economic Impact and Investment Opportunities
Al Layan Oasis will boost Dubai’s tourism sector. The projected 330,000 annual visitors will support local businesses and create new opportunities.
The project will also improve physical and mental wellbeing. Walking tracks, open spaces, and natural surroundings encourage healthy lifestyles.
Dubai has allocated 365,000 square meters for private sector investment. Businesses can establish retail, hospitality, and service offerings within the development.
Dubai’s Expanding Desert Oasis Network
Al Layan Oasis joins Al Qudra Lakes in the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve. That area already attracts visitors with:
-
Love Lake
-
86 km cycling track
-
Camping facilities
-
Luxury desert domes
Al Marmoom Reserve covers 10% of Dubai’s total area and hosts more than 158 bird species, including flamingos and Arabian oryx.
With Al Layan Oasis, Dubai strengthens its network of sustainable desert destinations. The emirate continues to protect natural landscapes while making them accessible to residents and tourists alike.
