Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has implemented traffic upgrades across 50 locations in 2024, significantly reducing travel times. These enhancements have cut travel times by 60% in some areas.

Key Initiatives and Impact

Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, states that these solutions have enhanced road network efficiency, improved vehicle flow, and reduced travel times. Road capacity has increased by up to 20% in several areas due to these upgrades.

Focus on Key Areas

  • Al Rebat Street: RTA extended Exit 55 leading to Al Rebat Street, increasing the number of lanes and boosting road capacity to 4,500 vehicles per hour.
  • Nad Al Sheba: A new entry and exit from Meydan Street were introduced, and the intersection of Latifa Bint Hamdan Street with Nad Al Sheba Street was converted into a roundabout to streamline traffic movement.
  • Sheikh Zayed Road: The RTA has implemented three major traffic improvements on Sheikh Zayed Road to ease traffic and enhance safety. These include extending merging distances between Umm Al Sheif Street and Al Manara Street, introducing an additional lane for traffic heading towards Al Manara. This is set to increase vehicle capacity in this direction by 30%.

Improvements Around Schools

Eight traffic improvement projects around 37 schools across Dubai were completed in 2024. These projects included widening roads, creating parking spaces, enhancing entry and exit points, and introducing traffic diversions. Peak-hour traffic flow improved by 20% as a result. Benefiting schools include Kings’ School, The International School of Choueifat – Dubai, and Dubai College.

Plans for 2025

RTA plans to implement over 75 additional traffic improvement projects in 2025. These include expanding intersections, constructing new entry and exit points, and introducing rapid traffic solutions in school zones.
