Ensuring Worker Safety: UAE’s Midday Break Policy 2024

The UAE authorities announced on Friday, May 31, that the midday break will be enforced from June 15 to September 15, 2024. This measure, now in its 20th consecutive year, aims to safeguard workers from the scorching sun between 12:30 pm and 3:00 pm.

Violation of this regulation will incur fines, starting at Dh5,000 per employee and reaching up to Dh50,000 if multiple employees are found working during the prohibited hours. Certain essential tasks such as water and electricity services, road maintenance, and other critical services are exempt from the break.

Companies needing to work during this period must obtain permits. Employers are mandated to provide necessary amenities like shaded areas, fans, drinking water, and first aid equipment to ensure the well-being of their workers.

Mohsin Al Nassi, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection Affairs at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), emphasized the importance of this regulation in prioritizing workers’ health and safety. The ministry will conduct awareness campaigns and site visits to ensure compliance with the midday break.
