UAE Implements Single-Use Plastic Ban: Shoppers Adapt to “Green” Practices

The implementation of the single-use plastic ban in the UAE has led to surprises for shoppers in Dubai and Sharjah as some supermarkets ceased the sale of plastic bags. The comprehensive prohibition, announced in January 2023, officially came into effect on January 1, 2024. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, issued the resolution, banning single-use plastic bags and products in the emirate. Shoppers, accustomed to the convenience of plastic bags, found themselves adapting to the change by carrying products by hand or opting for reusable alternatives. The move reflects the UAE’s commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing plastic waste.
