Dubai Police have implemented advanced smart camera technology to catch drivers using mobile phones while driving, even if their vehicles have tinted windows. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and enforce traffic regulations effectively.

Advanced Detection Technology

Errant motorists who believe they can hide behind tinted windows must reconsider. The new smart cameras are capable of detecting various road safety violations, including mobile phone usage and seat belt non-compliance, regardless of window tinting. Maj-Gen Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, reported that these cameras have already identified serious cases of distracted driving.

In one notable incident, a driver was caught using two phones simultaneously while driving. Another driver was seen reading a newspaper, obstructing their view of the road.

Penalties for Distracted Driving

Motorists caught violating these regulations face severe penalties. Vehicles can be impounded for up to 30 days for multiple traffic offenses, including mobile phone use while driving and tailgating. In addition to the vehicle impoundment, fines range from AED 400 to AED 1,000, along with four black points on the driver’s record.

How the Technology Works

Youssef Al Hansali, CEO of Vitronic Machine Vision, explained that the smart camera system utilizes advanced photo technology and artificial intelligence to capture violations. The system takes front-facing photos of violating motorists and processes them for further action. Remarkably, it functions effectively from multiple angles and can penetrate tinted windows.

The Importance of Road Safety

Thomas Edelmann, founder and managing director of Road Safety UAE, emphasized the dangers of distracted driving, noting that those texting while driving are 20 times more likely to be involved in a crash. The Ministry of Interior’s data from 2023 ranked distracted driving as the leading cause of accidents in the UAE.

Authorities stress that cooperation from motorists is crucial for achieving the strategic goal of reducing road accident fatalities and making the country a global leader in traffic safety.
