Dubai Introduces Flexible Summer Work Hours for Government Employees

Dubai has rolled out flexible work hours for government staff during the peak summer months of 2025. Starting July 1 and running through September 12, the initiative gives departments the freedom to choose between two scheduling formats.

Two Work Schedules for Summer Productivity

Government entities will divide employees into two groups:

  • Group One will work eight hours daily from Monday to Thursday and take Friday off as a full holiday.
  • Group Two will follow a schedule of seven hours from Monday to Thursday and 4.5 hours on Friday.

This approach preserves the standard five-day workweek while offering more flexibility and balance.

Pilot Program Revealed High Employee Satisfaction

In 2024, 21 government departments tested the flexible schedule from August 12 to September 30. Results showed a 98% satisfaction rate, alongside increased productivity and improved workplace morale.

Longer Weekends Become the New Norm

Most Dubai government employees already benefit from a two-and-a-half-day weekend. The new schedule allows participating workers to enjoy an even longer weekend, improving overall well-being.

UAE Enforces Midday Work Ban to Protect Outdoor Laborers

From June 15 to September 15, the UAE has enforced a midday work ban to protect employees from extreme heat. The rule prohibits outdoor work between 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. daily.

Strict Inspections and Penalties in Place

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) launched inspections at construction sites across the country. Companies face fines of Dh5,000 per worker for violations, with penalties reaching up to Dh50,000 for multiple offenses.

Air-Conditioned Stations Support Delivery Workers

To support delivery personnel during summer, the UAE has established over 10,000 air-conditioned rest stations nationwide. These facilities aim to provide relief and maintain health standards throughout the hottest months.
