Dubai is set to enhance its entertainment landscape with the introduction of the Dubai Sphere, a Middle Eastern version of the iconic Las Vegas Sphere. MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle announced this development during the Skift Global Forum on September 19, revealing that the Sphere will be centrally located among the MGM Grand, Bellagio, and Aria hotels on Wasl’s megaproject, The Island.

Project Details

The Dubai Sphere will stand at 110 meters tall and accommodate 300 seats, making it slightly smaller than its Las Vegas counterpart, which reaches 112 meters and holds 18,600 guests. Hornbuckle described the Sphere as “equally compelling,” featuring a show line that narrates Dubai’s transformation from a desert to a bustling megatropolis.

Development Timeline

Although MGM has not announced an official opening date for the Dubai Sphere, it is expected to align with the completion of The Island project. Construction has recently resumed after a contract was awarded in November 2023, marking significant progress since the project’s initial announcement in 2017.

Casino Plans

While Hornbuckle confirmed that the $2.5 billion Dubai project will not include a casino at this time, he expressed hope for future gaming opportunities in Dubai. Currently, MGM has only pursued a gaming license in Abu Dhabi, while Wynn Marjan in Ras Al Khaimah remains the only confirmed hotel with a gaming license in the UAE, set to open in 2027.

Conclusion

The Dubai Sphere promises to bring a unique entertainment experience to the emirate, complementing existing attractions and further establishing Dubai as a premier destination for global tourism and entertainment.
