Global Village will host a celebration of the Emirati tradition of Hag Al Laila for the first time this year. The event will occur in the area between the Main Stage and the Dragon Lake and feature the distribution of traditional sweets.
What is Hag Al Laila?
Hag Al Laila, also known as Qargian, is a deeply-rooted Emirati social tradition observed on the fifteenth night of Sha’ban, marking the approach of Ramadan. The event promotes generosity and social solidarity. During Hag Al Laila, children go from house to house cheerfully calling out “Atoona Hag Al Laila,” meaning “For this night, give us sweets”. Families buy sweets, nuts, toys, and gifts to give to children.
Event Details
Global Village will hold various cultural and interactive activities for families and children from February thirteenth to February sixteenth. The event will include interactive workshops, traditional performances, and meet-and-greet sessions. The venue will feature decorations inspired by Emirati heritage, including palm fronds, lanterns, and traditional seating areas.
Aims of the Celebration
This year’s celebration at Global Village aims to educate younger generations about Emirati traditions and strengthen their connection to them. This aligns with President Sheikh Mohamed’s announcement of this year as the ‘Year of Community’.
