Dubai is preparing to launch its tenth Salik toll gate located in Al Safa South on Sheikh Zayed Road. Although the gate is currently installed, it will not be operational until the end of November 2024.

Location and Features

The new toll gate is positioned between Al Meydan Street and Umm Al Sheif Street, with gates installed on both sides of Sheikh Zayed Road. While there are no decals or markings yet, the gates feature the same structure as existing ones, equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for detecting Salik tags on vehicles.

Operational Timeline

Salik CEO Ibrahim Al Haddad confirmed that both new toll gates, including another at Business Bay Crossing along Al Khail Road, will be operational by the end of November. He assured that construction is on schedule and no delays are anticipated.

Sustainability Commitment

In a significant move towards sustainability, both new gates will be nearly 100% solar-powered, aligning with Dubai’s environmental goals. This initiative marks a first for Salik and emphasizes their commitment to green energy solutions.

Traffic Management Benefits

The Al Safa South gate aims to enhance traffic flow between Financial Centre Street and Meydan Street, reducing right-turn traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road to Meydan Street by 15%. Additionally, it will be linked with the existing Al Safa North gate, allowing motorists to be charged only once if they pass through both gates within an hour. The Business Bay Crossing gate is expected to alleviate congestion on Al Khail Road by 12-15% and reduce traffic volume on Al Rabat Street by 10-16%.

Current Salik System Overview

With the addition of these new gates, Dubai will have a total of ten operational Salik gates. The existing gates include:

  • Al Mamzar North
  • Al Mamzar South
  • Al Garhoud Bridge
  • Al Maktoum Bridge
  • Airport Tunnel
  • Al Safa
  • Al Barsha
  • Jebel Ali

Last year, approximately 593 million journeys passed through Salik’s toll gates. From January to June this year, there were 238.5 million trips, generating Dh1.1 billion in revenue—a 5.6% increase compared to the previous year.

Conclusion

The upcoming Salik toll gates in Dubai represent a strategic move to improve traffic management while promoting sustainability. Motorists can look forward to enhanced travel efficiency as these gates become operational later this year.
